CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

“So what do you think?” Raj asked.

Brian crouched behind the sparkling white Tesla.

Across the road, he could see a petrol station. They were just about on the A6. Which felt dangerous. Busiest road through Preston, ran right up towards Lancaster. If there was any stretch of the road that was going to be “populated,” it was this.

But they didn’t really have much of a choice. They needed to cross a small section of it if they wanted to get to the scenic path that led down towards the railway line.

Brian used to cut down that path all the time. It was overgrown. Always was. Ever since he was a kid. Used to play down there when he was a lad. Him and his mate, Trev. They’d spend absolutely hours exploring the jungle that hid right in the heart of Preston, pretending they were on the cusp of solving some mystery or other—supernatural or otherwise.

How he longed for those days right now.

He’d been down there a few times since, with work. Found a body down by the tracks one afternoon. Bloke’s head, completely torn from his neck. Covered in these distinctive tiger tattoos, all over his body.

And yet they could never identify him. No family came forward. No one.

And it was sad, in a way. Probably a migrant worker, forced into slave labour. Brian felt for them. Sure, he was always keen on the borders being managed. A country couldn’t get silly, after all.

But the vast majority of those people were being sold a dream. Exploited.

And in Brian’s line of work, he saw such horrid shit involving the gangs that exploited these people, that it kind of made him sympathise even more.

But right now, on their route, there was something that had caught their eye.

A petrol station. Quite a big one, too. Weirdly enough, the windows weren’t shuttered up, either.

There were a couple of cars parked up out front. Looked like they’d started filling their tanks, then given up and run away. Puddles of petrol lay on the bay. As far as Brian could tell, no blood.

“We’ve got a chance,” Raj said. “To grab some supplies. A little food. A little water.”

“I don’t like it,” Brian said.

And he was being honest. He didn’t like it. Something about it gave him the creeps. Why wasn’t this place shuttered up like every other store? Sure, it could be a coincidence. Maybe whoever was due to open this place up just hadn’t turned up because of the curfew. There were plenty of explanations.

But…

Still, it gave Brian the creeps.

“In and out,” Raj said. “We don’t have to go mad. I’ve got a little cash, too. So… so it won’t be stealing.”

Brian wasn’t sure who Raj was trying to convince with that. Himself, or Brian. The way Brian saw it, stealing was the least of their problems now. As much as it went against his police instincts… it felt like money had kind of lost its value already.

Which was worrying.

Really fucking worrying.

The only thing that seemed to matter right now was survival.
